Mars Matrix

Mars Matrix Review

Buy From Amazon.com

Taking the '80s art of 2-D space shooters and melding it with 21st-century technology, Mars Matrix fills the screen with intricate backgrounds, dozens of independently moving objects, and intense arcade action. Your tools in dealing with an onslaught of bullets from all directions are a fairly standard laser gun, a powerful pulse weapon, and a special attack that can allow your spacecraft to inhale incoming fire and return it in a fierce volley. Old-schoolers will be pleased to know they can recover the spoils of defeated enemies in power-up form, and go to a weapons shop where they can upgrade their rigs.

Toy Commander

Toy Commander Review

Buy From Amazon.com

Toy Commander Feature

  • full immersion in an awsome 3d interactive envirement
  • choose from 35 different vehicles!
  • 50 missions with multiple objectives
  • deathmatch mode with 3 distinct ways to play
  • up to four-players screen action

Most of us remember waging monumental battles and planning out complicated rescues with toy planes, boats, and such in our youth. Now you can do the same, virtually, in Sega's Toy Commander. The premise is straight from a six-year-old's dream: some of your toys have gone bad and are rampaging through eight rooms in your intricately detailed home. It's up to you to take command of the loyal toys and lead them through 50 individual missions to put a stop to the plastic menace.

The progressively more difficult missions, consisting of action sorties like rescuing toy steamboats from malicious submarines, or strategic ones like transporting eggs into a pot of boiling water, are anything but a tea party. All missions fit comfortably within the game's storyline and can be seriously challenging. The sense of scale, as you commandeer the game's 35 vehicles, is true to the look of an ordinary room to a tiny toy. Fun and offering a surprising amount of depth, Toy Commander is a nostalgic, innovative, and entertaining romp. --Sajed Ahmed

Pros:

  • 4-player split-screen death match mode, using any of the 35 vehicles in one of the eight rooms
  • All the vehicles look and handle very differently, adding to the gameplay
  • Impressive detail and interactivity in the game's environments
  • Varied missions include warlike action, racing, and strategy elements
Cons:
  • Tedious mission goals could prove frustrating

Chu Chu Rocket

Chu Chu Rocket Review

Buy From Amazon.com

EyeToy is best enjoyed by groups
Online gaming has arrived on the Dreamcast! Chu Chu Rocket is the first \ game to fully utilize the Internet connectivity of the Dreamcast. This simple (but very addic\ tive) puzzle game is strongly reminiscent of the traditional "cat-and-mouse" game. Your goal is to herd some \ intergalactic rats (the strangely-named Chu Chus) into a rocket, while avoiding some whacked-out space \ cats (a.k.a. Kapu Kapus) that are in fast pursuit.

While the bare-boned graphics won't win any design awards, Chu Chu Rocket does offer an impressive online gaming experience. In addition to the solo mode, the game let\ s you connect with gamers from around the world for true multiplayer madness. Whether you compete against\ others or tag-team to solve the puzzles, Chu Chu Rocket provides an exciting entry point into \ the emerging world of networked gaming. (Note: Online features require players to have an existing IS\ P connection, sold separately.)

Fighting Force 2

Fighting Force 2 Review

Buy From Amazon.com

Fighting Force 2 Feature

  • sega dreamcast
  • fighting game
  • fighting force 2

Similar to Syphon Filter for the PlayStation, Fighting Force 2 puts players in the role of a cyber-enhanced cop of the future that is trained to infiltrate evil research and development facilities, destroy their work, and clear out any and all opposition.

Fighting Force 2 has some of the biggest levels around, giving main character Hawk Manson the opportunity to explore multiple floors, smash through walls, and break almost anything in search of keys to new areas. Levels are filled with enemies whom Hawk can defeat with one of 20 weapons including rifles, knives, and sledgehammers. Weapons can be attained through the destruction of cabinets, soda machines, and crates.

Originally a PlayStation game, the transition to the Dreamcast hasn't exactly been a smooth one. Frankly, Fighting Force 2 has been transformed from a good game into an average one due to this version's poor player controls. Improved graphics are welcome, but now it's harder to position Hawk for a fight. The PlayStation version is definitely the more desirable of the two. --Robb Guido

Pros:

  • Improved graphics over the PlayStation version
Cons:
  • Mucky controls take away from what was a good game

Mortal Kombat Gold

Mortal Kombat Gold Review

Buy From Amazon.com

Exclusive to the Dreamcast, Mortal Kombat Gold is the latest rendition of Midway's arcade classic fighter. Running at 60 frames per second with high-resolution graphics--a first for this series on any platform--the game boasts the look and feel of a quarter- munching upright arcade machine.

The fighting system in this game is basically the same as it was in Mortal Kombat 3, with the addition of a few new characters and weapons and some subtle gameplay tweaks. There are several new gameplay modes that should excite Mortal Kombat and fighting-game fans. A new battle mode enables would-be combatants to select teams of multiple characters for team-based fighting. There is also a one- and two-player endurance mode, a traditional "versus" mode, two-on-two fighting, and a practice mode. The latter explains to players how to perform fatalities but, disappointingly, doesn't let you perform them.

With only minor updates, Mortal Kombat Gold falls back on its roots. It's a good game if you are an avid Mortal Kombat fan, though others may wish to consider starting their Dreamcast fighting game collection with Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Virtua Fighter 3 Team Battle, and Street Fighter Alpha 3. --Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • Classic Mortal Kombat characters with updated features
  • High-resolution graphics at 60 frames per second
  • Additional gameplay modes increase replayability

Cons:

  • Not much different from Mortal Kombat 3
  • Characters are stiffly animated
  • Background detail scant

Wacky Races

Wacky Races Review

Buy From Amazon.com

Wacky Races is a cross between South Park Rally and Mario 64, and stars classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon characters. While this kart racing game doesn't really bring anything new to the racing genre, it does bring hours of lighthearted fun.

All the members of the motley crew from the cartoons are here, including Penelope Pitstop, Dick Dastardly, Muttley--even the Slag Brothers. They've all come with their trademark vehicles, from the Slag Brothers' rock-solid, relentless Boulder Mobile to Peter Perfect's turbocharged, streamlined Turbo Terrific. To add the always-present fighting element, the cars come with their own individual features to help you get around the numerous courses.

A title ideal for keeping younger kids busy while not appearing totally alien to the rest of us, this game boils down to a kid-friendly version of South Park Rally. The colorful cartoon graphics give you the feeling that you're in the cartoon itself. --Mike Fehlauer

F1 World Grand Prix

F1 World Grand Prix Review

Buy From Amazon.com

The Dreamcast delivers a new sense of realism to the racing-games genre with F1 World Grand Prix. Not only is it one of the most beautiful games of its kind, with lavishly modeled cars and tracks, but it's one of the deepest ones as well.

Almost every aspect of F1's cars can be customized, including gear ratio, suspension, brake sensitivity, front and rear wings, as well as tires and the amount of fuel racers choose to carry. Pit stops let players refuel and repair damage--which cars take realistically--and an announcer identifies racers' ranking, position gains and losses, and specific car damage.

There are 16 races in championship mode, each with weather conditions based on conditions found in the real event. A match-race mode lets two friends compete, which is ideal when you want to go head-to-head against a buddy. The only real drawback to this game is that it lacks the speed of an arcade-style racer, but this fact alone may be enough to scare away nonracing fans. --Robb Guido

Pros:

  • Real F1 racers and their cars
  • Beautifully modeled tracks and nice weather effects
  • An in-depth car-setup screen
Cons:
  • Races are slower than they could be
  • The controls are a bit difficult to master

Soul Fighter

Soul Fighter Review

Buy From Amazon.com

Red Orb's Dreamcast debut is a quirky mix of simplistic hand-to-hand combat, maze crawling, and power-up eating. And you'll need the strength of a stomach full of soul food to mow down the plethora of townsfolk turned beasties in Soul Fighter. Whack a bad guy, and his soul is put into your magic bottle for safekeeping until you've freed enough souls to pop open the door to the next level.

While on the surface, the game may seem to borrow heavily from the fantasy-action romp Gauntlet Legends, it actually has a lot more in common with old Sega Genesis games such as Streets of Rage. Only instead of a side-scrolling brawler, this game presents the world in stunning 3-D, with a rather fussy camera-angle system that can be detrimental to both gameplay and your full stomach. Still, since the controls are so simplified--with only three main buttons for kick, punch, and jump--it's hard to fault the game for using awkward camera movement to make things more challenging. A rather odd epicurean collection of power-ups uses pig's heads, roasted chickens, and wood-planked fish to boost your strength. Projectile weapons such as crossbows and throwing axes can be uncovered by brashly shattering treasure chests that are strewn about, or by giving some beastly bag of bones a few soul-freeing punts.

Three characters to choose from make the game slightly more deep, but the lack of two- or three-player simultaneous beast-busting is a serious drawback. The level designs are very simple and uninspired, with an odd amount of backtracking required to finish each one. Soul Fighter is by no means original, but it does deliver a limbic system thrill, like a plotless, yet alluringly action-heavy, Jean-Claude Van Damme film. --Jeff Young

Pros:

  • Two buttons can unleash a varied and impressive amount of fighting
  • Great frame rates and animation
  • Easy to pick up, arcade-style gameplay
Cons:
  • Motion sickness-inducing camera movement
  • Replayability reduced by lack of multiplayer mode
  • Tediously drawn-out intro movie

4 Wheel Thunder

4 Wheel Thunder Review

Buy From Amazon.com

What do you get when you move the over-the-top gameplay of the water-based racer Hydro Thunder to gritty land-based environments? 4 Wheel Thunder, of course. This pseudosequel is a nice-looking game that manages to entertain despite its simplistic gameplay.

4 Wheel Thunder lets players race a variety of big-wheeled off-road monster cars and trucks across 24 tracks. The wide tracks are brimming with shortcuts, so exploration is encouraged. We had to practice for hours to find the proper racing line, as the computer opponents are incredibly difficult to beat until you've won a few races and upgraded your ride.

The graphics impressed us, as 4 Wheel Thunder has detailed vehicles that bounce through several well-rendered environments. Best of all, the frame rate is absolutely smooth regardless of how many objects are onscreen. The only thing lacking is deep gameplay. All of our time was spent picking up the speed-boost power-ups scattered around the track, which give a nice burst of speed for a few seconds. Unfortunately there are no other power-ups, weapons, or anything else to spice up the racing, making the game more monotonous than it should be. 4 Wheel Thunder is nowhere near as over the top as Hydro Thunder, but it's still a lot of fun as a pure racing game. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Clean, detailed graphics that run at a smooth frame rate
  • Challenging gameplay
Cons:
  • Few power-ups mean the racing can get dull at times
  • Cheap computer opponents are frustrating until you can upgrade your vehicle
